Koala Class

Welcome to Koala Class! We are a mixed class of Reception and Year 1 children with 7 boys and 3 girls. The children in Koala Class are always keen to learn and we undertake this in so many exciting ways! Communication runs through everything we do and the children are continuing to work hard on their Key Skills. We are developing our communication in ways that are personal to each and every one of us, from PECS to communication boards, Makaton to speech. Our communication rich environment enables us to learn in meaningful ways and develop learning for life.

We undertake work in both literacy and mathematics, again with our individual targets being met through our Key Skills work. We are learning to count, match, sort, spell, read and create patterns as well as develop our understanding of one to one correspondence. Some of us complete phonics work and others are leaning to develop our understanding of instructions both visually and verbally. We use our schedules to support our understanding of where our learning will take place and support transitions, we use a work system which tells us what learning we will be doing!

We also have lots of opportunities for self-directed learning, selecting resources, learning how to use new things, imbed our skills and play in ways that are meaningful to us. The children are encouraged to explore, enjoy time outside and are well supported by the caring and nurturing team around them.

Afternoons in Koala Class are always lots of fun whilst we complete topic work in the four different areas: Creativity, Personal Development, Physical Development and the World Around Us. Here we explore different ways of creating art and music, find out about nature and our environment, learn about our friends, get our bodies active and build on skills for life.
