Personal Development
At Forest park School we recognise that pupil wellbeing is a priority and focus on individual’s personal development in all aspects of school life. Our aim is to develop happy pupils who have a strong sense of self and are able to communicate this to others. We place great value on providing strategies to enable our pupils to regulate their emotions and be ready to learn.
Personal Development covers a wider range of core areas:
- Wellbeing and feelings
- Relationships
- Keeping well
- Routines and Independence
- Safety
- Readiness to Learn
- Respect and Diversity
- My Contribution
Pupil’s Personal Development learning is woven through everything that we do at Forest Park School and we utilise every opportunity to support the development of our pupils. We believe that learning reaches far beyond the classroom! All pupils have personal key skill targets that link with at least one of the core areas, as well as their EHCP outcomes. Staff ensure opportunities to practise and develop these skills are planned into each individual’s week as appropriate to them.
Personal Development is also taught weekly through specific PSHE lessons where pupils focus on different areas:
- Self-care, support and safety
- Managing Feelings
- Changing and Growing
- Self-Awareness
- Healthy Lifestyles
- The World I live in
Lessons are practical, fun and multi-sensory to ensure pupil’s can apply key concepts learnt to their everyday lives.
We also plan and deliver special day and week events that link to our Personal Development curriculum area such as ‘Friendship week’ and ‘Pride week’. This gives our pupils opportunities to celebrate the diverse world we live in and recognise their own and other’s personal achievements and contribution.
