Maths

At Forest Park School we believe that teaching and practising key maths concepts helps our learners to make sense of the world around them and problem solve. We present maths as a functional skill and ensure that using and applying is threaded throughout all areas of our maths curriculum. Our pupils are presented with purposeful, individualised learning that is practised in a range of contexts meaningful to them.

Each child receives an individualised Maths pathway that focuses on their current achievement and their next steps. Maths is taught daily through pupil’s individual key skills, as well as small group learning opportunities. We make maths practical and fun and provide opportunities for pupils to generalise their knowledge. We place a strong emphasis on developing pupil’s understanding of number to equip them with skills they can apply in their everyday lives.

We also ensure our pupils are presented with a broad range of learning areas within maths through our topic work - this includes:

  • Number
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Data Handling
  • Time
  • Money
  • Position and Direction.

We believe learning Maths concepts doesn’t just happen in the classroom. We continue to weave learning opportunities throughout our school day in all areas to make it meaningful and relevant to each individual pupil.
